Supervision of Spiritual Directors as Offered by CFDM

The on-going supervision of spiritual directors is a hallmark of the CFDM philosophy. We encourage our students to continue facilitated supervision beyond their two year training with us and peer supervision for as long as they continue to practice the ministry of giving spiritual direction forward.

Below is a description of how we see supervision operating in the life of a spiritual director and the emphasis of the supervision experience.

Supervision should be centered on your experience and concerns regarding a direction session and focused on how your prayer, beliefs and assumptions impinge upon and affect your relationship with the directee. The focus of the session is on you as a spiritual director and specifically YOUR spiritual life - rather than your directee.

This approach is designed with the assumption that spiritual guidance is not a matter of finding the right technique to handle a given individual in a specific situation. Instead, it is a matter of clearing the blind spots that block you as the Spiritual Director so that you can be clearly and immediately present and open to God’s Spirit in both the spiritual direction and supervision sessions.

The following is a link to the verbatim process we use to facilitate the above experience.

If you would like to receive one-on-one or peer group supervision for your spiritual direction practice, or if you would like to be trained as a supervisor for the purpose of either supervising students in our program or to strengthen your own skills as a peer supervisor, please contact Katrina Obata.
